An evacuation drill revealed weaknesses

The planned building evacuation drill, which took place on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, began with the sounding of the fire alarm at exactly 11:15 a.m. The building was cleared in seven minutes, despite the fact that due to a malfunction in the evacuation door to Marešova Street, some people had to leave the building through a different exit. The door has already been repaired. The fire patrol then checked whether anyone remained in the building (one employee) so that everyone could return to the building. The management thanks everyone for their feedback, which was collected via an online questionnaire.

Here is a summary and conclusions of the evacuation drill:

  • it was not a fire drill (this is carried out in cooperation and in the presence of firefighters and involves some other aspects)
  • the building was cleared in seven minutes
  • one employee remained in the building
  • one of the evacuation doors to Marešova Street did not open, a repair was immediately arranged and it has already been carried out
  • we will increase the number of fire patrol members
  • we'll increase the number of alarm sirens so they can be heard throughout the building
  • we'll get a megaphone so we can better organize such drills
  • the faculty assembly point at the Red Church, as well as the evacuation routes etc., are set by the Fire Brigade of the Czech Republic and the faculty cannot change them (e.g. it is not possible to use the area opposite the faculty, because it is the evacuation point of the building on Komenský Square. etc.)
  • the faculty is not authorized to stop traffic in the event of an evacuation drill
  • the distribution of blank papers at the exit of the building was not organized by the management of the faculty or the building administration (it was probably an experiment or a joke)

Reminder: according to the fire evacuation plan, teachers check the number of evacuees from their classrooms, supervisors check the number of evacuees from their workplaces.
