What does a nuclear reactor have in common with a facial recognition camera, a Big Tech algorithm, or a university hiring committee? More than one might expect.
On March 23-26, teachers at the MUNI Language Centre at FSS hosted four postdoctoral fellows from the Max Weber Programme at the European University Institute (EUI) in classes for FSS Bachelor’s and Master’s students.
The fellows were visiting for the 9th annual Teaching Practice Week, which every year brings EUI students to Brno to get hands-on teaching practice and one-on-one feedback and advice from the seasoned teaching staff at the Language Centre.
This year, three fellows visited FSS classes – Carolina Billiotti, Mohammad Eslami, and Sahoo Rajkumar. They gave interactive lessons that shared findings from their wide-ranging research, and guided students through many aspects of a fundamental question: who holds power and who gets to regulate it?
Five teachers at the Language Centre – Athena Alchazidu, Belinda Allan, Linda Krahula Doleží, Joe Lennon, and Šárka Roušavá – hosted the visitors in their classes. The fellows delivered two lessons each, getting feedback each time from both the students and Language Centre teachers. They learned what worked in the lessons, and what they could try next time to make the lessons even more effective. They returned to Florence with more powerful teaching tools for sharing their cutting-edge research into the forces that are changing our world.

Our traditional Semestr-End gathering took place on the last Wednesday in June. Starting at 4 p.m., colleagues came together in the auditorium and in the courtyard, where the event continued to provide a great atmosphere throughout the hot afternoon and into the evening. We were delighted to see so many people take the opportunity to meet informally with colleagues from across the faculty. There were refreshments, a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere, and a well-deserved break after the busy end of the semester.
