Full-time and combined (ie part-time) doctoral programs taught in English

Doctoral studies in social sciences are of key importance. As the scientific research grows and widens, doctoral students find their place in research teams and contribute to the joint efforts.
Doctoral study can be full-time or part-time and can be studied in Czech or English. The standard length of the study is four years and the maximum length is eight years. The study is based on the Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University and ECTS credit system with a minimum of 240 ECTS.

The study is designed for successful graduates of Master's programs in related fields. Applicants are expected to carry out their theoretical and methodological knowledge and other qualifications essential for expert work in DSPs, and advanced knowledge of English. As part of the admission procedure, the applicant presents a research project which must be compatible with the general focus of the research activities of the department.

Applications open twice a year:

  • September enrollment: apply between 1 January and 30 April
  • February enrollment : apply between 1 August and 30 November
    • Please note: February enrollment is open only for students who do not need a visa for study purposes in the Czech Republic.

Tuition fees

  • The tuition fee for the Doctoral programs in the English language at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University is set to be 750 euro per semester (1,500 Euro per year or 6,000 Euro per the whole degree program).

Tips for financing your studies

Full-time students (not 'combined' programmes) in English-taught programs receive a monthly scholarship of 12,000 czk/month. Students can also receive additional financing through the following opportunities.

    30 April

    Deadline to submit application to doctoral degree programs for September enrollment (e-application is open between 1 January and 30 April)

    PhD applicants, who will also apply for the International Visagrad Scholarship (IVF), must submit their full PhD application pack by 15 February. They will later then apply online for the September round. 

  • June

    PhD candidates interviews– on the basis of your application, you will be invited to an interview - candidates from visa countries can be evaluated via skype interviews or correspondence. 

  • February enrollment

Admission requirements

All PhD programs applicants must have completed prior Master degree education, preferably in social sciences or humanities. Admission is granted to candidates with good study results, strong motivation and interest in the topics. Proof of English language proficiency and recommendation letters required.

  3. Consult your proposal with a potential supervisor – the choice of topic and a supervisor are crucial for PhD studies.   4. E-application: establish the online record of your application (it has to be submitted and paid), and send us the relevant documents

Documents as part of PhD application

As part of your application, you also need to submit

  • Your CV/resumé + list of publications
  • Proposal for PhD dissertation
  • Consent of the future supervisor
  • Diploma (or confirmation of current studies) and full transcripts, ev. diploma supplement
  • Those who are not able to take part in the entrance examinations
    • Proof of English – minimum level B2 or equivalent
    • 2 Recommendations – preferably sent by the referees themselves to our mail or e-mail contacts

 

Important!: Prior to enrollment, it is necessary to obtain the formal recognition of prior education in the Czech Republic. 

Enrollment

Enrolment in doctoral study programmes takes place only online via the e-application form.

MU graduates only need to click the Enrol in Study button, which they will find in the enrolment period of their e-application, and confirm their agreement to the WST (Work safety training).

Graduates of other universities must additionally identify themselves after enrolling in the e-application. It is possible to identify yourself in 2 ways:

  1. It is possible to verify your identity online via video call, when you record a video directly in the IS MU according to the instructions. The study department will then check these videos in a special application and if everything is in order, you will set a new primary password and be identified in this way (you will receive a confirmation e-mail).
  2. You will stop in person at the faculty at the Study Department and after personal verification of your identity, a new primary password will be generated.
