Popis The South Caucasus has been a frontline for the collision of empires, as well as the location of considerable migration by different national groups. The strategic significance of the region attracts the attention not only of regional leaders, but also of great power actors and international organizations. Taking into consideration how complex and multidimensional the conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia is, as well as the interests of international actors and their mutually exclusive goals, this paper explores the consequences of the Russian-Georgian armed on the systemic and the state levels of analysis. The paper offers in-depth analysis of economic, political, strategic and military aspects, which uncovers the fragility of peace and new strategic realities in this region. The paradoxical situation remains that Russia recognizes the existence of South Ossetia as an independent state, while North Ossetia is regarded as a part of Russia. This implies that Russia considers the sovereignty of South Ossetia to be an instrumental principle, using it as a tool to pressure Georgia and the international community.
