Popis Film schools are understood as an important platform for educating new generations of professionals in creative, technical, and management professions in national audiovisual industries. But what is the students’ point of view on student filmmaking? Based on their experiences, how do they reflect the specifics of film production under the roof of the school in contrast to a professional environment? In my paper, I will present an ethnographic analysis of the graduate films’ production process made at the Audiovisual Arts Studio at Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín in the academic year 2024/25. I focus on reflections of student crew members during the process of graduate films’ realization, which I consider as transitional projects between school and professional environment. Besides earning a university degree, making a graduate film allows undergraduates to showcase their skills and ambitions as aspiring professionals. In this respect, there is a visible contradiction in the understanding of students’ work and cooperation in terms of choosing collaborators and collective problem-solving. This dichotomy also appears in students’ reflections on the influence of the school itself. Undergraduates, on the one hand, appreciate school as a safe playground where they can make mistakes while doing their projects. On the other hand, many students challenge teachers’ approaches and strict written rules of school production, arguing that they do not always align with the “reality” of professional filmmaking. Paper can enrich our awareness of the specific production cultures in film schools, where students may tend to create their own rules in filmmaking.
