Development and Validation of the State Self-Objectification Questionnaire (SSQ)

| Popis | Compared to its trait counterpart, measuring state self-objectification has been hindered by the lack of psychometrically sound and theoretically grounded measures. Rooted in Objectification Theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997), we developed and validated the State Self-Objectification Questionnaire (SSQ), encompassing two dimensions of state self-objectification—preoccupation with physical appearance and adopting an objectifying perspective—in young adult women. The study was preregistered on OSF. The first phase of data collection took place from September to October 2025 via social media recruitment. We performed cognitive interviews to examine theoretically expected response processes (N = 10, age 18-29) and a quantitative study to assess SSQ’s factor structure, measurement invariance, and correlations with other components of body image (N = 936, age 18-29). A cross-validation study will proceed in March 2026. Qualitative findings supported the expected response processes and let us improve several item wordings. Preliminary quantitative analyses indicated a one-factor, rather than the hypothesized two-factor, structure. The one-factor solution showed adequate model fit, high internal consistency, measurement invariance across age groups (18–23, 24–29), and correlations with trait self-objectification and state body image of expected magnitudes. SSQ shows promising psychometric properties, covering a theoretical niche left blank by trait self-objectification measures. Following cross-validation, SSQ may be particularly useful for experimental self-objectification research. The full results and guidelines for SSQ’s use in research will be discussed at the conference. |
