Over the past two decades, the relationship between news media and the public has
deteriorated, posing a significant challenge to democracy. While extensive previous research
highlights the complexity of the decline, solutions remain elusive. This project examines the
erosion of the vital link from both perspectives—journalists and the public—positioning itself at
the intersection of news production research and audience research, while also responding to
calls for an audience turn in journalism studies. By integrating these perspectives, the project
explores both the factors contributing to the decline and potential strategies for renewal.
Specifically, it examines three key areas: (1) mutual perceptions of journalists and the public
(imagined audiences vs. imagined journalists), (2) their views of the causes of their strained
relationship, and (3) potential solutions, including audience engagement strategies, with
particular focus on marginalised groups. By examining these dimensions, the project aims to
generate insights that can inform both journalistic practice and policy.
