My Life at the Faculty Radio
By Hayk Hakobyan, October 2025
When I tell people what I study Politics, Media, and Communication they usually nod and expect me to talk about news analysis or digital campaigns, but while I love the theory, my heart truly belongs in one of the most hands-on places on campus: the Faculty Radio.
You might wonder why, with a packed schedule of classes and my role as a Program Ambassador, I chose to dedicate my free time to running a radio station. You see for me studying university is not enough, I need to make sure that I have some place to implement my knowledge from my classes, so where else if not our radio. Our program is all about understanding how information flows, how messages are crafted, and how communication shapes society. There is simply no better way to internalize these concepts than by being the one pushing the buttons. Running the radio is not only about speaking but also crafting the message I want to pass, analyzing which topics might be engaging and useful for our students and of course making the script, the same for the people eI host.
My Mission as an Ambassador and a Broadcaster
As your our Program Ambassador, I’m tasked with representing our field and inspiring future students. And to me, the radio is one of the best representation of what we do. It’s where communication becomes active, somewhat democratic, and community-focused.
The faculty radio is more than a platform for sharing music. It is:
- A Voice for the Community: We give students a platform to discuss issues that matter to them, It’s a space where every student has a microphone.
- A Skill-Building Hub: From interviewing techniques and sound editing to managing a team and working under a tight broadcast deadline these are the transferable skills that will make us stand out in the job market, long after graduation.
- Fun and Connection: To be really honest it’s also an incredible amount of fun. There’s a thrill that comes with creating something from scratch, working with a team of passionate colleagues, and knowing that your voice is literally reaching listeners across the campus.
Final Thoughts: Tune In and Take Part
Running the Faculty Radio is the most demanding, rewarding, and relevant thing I do outside of the lecture hall along with shooting fun videos for instagram and interviewing professors time to time. It perfectly bridges the gap between academic theory and professional practice.
So, the next time you switch our podcast on, remember you’re listening to more than just a playlist you’re listening to the podcast produced by students just like you.
