Master's Studies
Students are encouraged to submit the application as early as possible and not wait for the final deadline to have more time to apply for their visa.
English-taught Master Programs
Students who study at the Faculty of Social Studies find their opening to the world of opportunities. Classes are taught by experts in their field, as well as visiting professors from well-known universities around the world. Masaryk University, as the second largest university in the Czech Republic is able to invite ambassadors and experts in their fields, in addition to hosting conferences.

Students can choose to start the program in September or February. Please see deadlines and more information below.
The Master Studies are 2-year (4 semester) programs completed by the Master of Defense and the Final State Exam. The title awarded is Master (corresponding to the English Master), abbreviated as Mgr.
General info on Masters programs
Master programs seek motivated candidates with strong interest in social science theory and methodology in the field. They offer introduction to disciplines and core areas in compulsory courses and a wide range of options for specialization.
Standard length of study is two years and it is based on Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University. Students are required to complete 20 ECTS credits per semester as a minimum; however the optimal study plan counts at least 30 ECTS. The overall value of 180 ECTS must be obtained during the whole study to take part in the Final State Examination of the Master Thesis and written or oral examination.
The study is designed for successful graduates of Bachelor programs in social sciences and humanities, or related fields. Applicants are expected to prove their motivation, good results from previous studies, and advanced knowledge of English. In addition, the admission committes evaluate recommendations, resumes and other documents. Sometimes, skype interviews are part of the admission procedure.

Applicants who wish to enrol for the Spring semester 2025 can submit their applications from 1 July 2024 until 31 October 2024.
Applicants who wish to enrol for the Autumn semester 2025 can submit their applications from 1 November 2024 until 15 May 2025.
* For students from countries that require visa to study in the Czech Republic , we recommend applying the following deadlines to give more time for the visa process. For students from non-OECD countries, please note that this process may take longer than expected.
Note: the admission documents from the university can´t be older than 180 days at the time you apply for visa otherwise your visa application will not be accepted at the embassy.

In case you wish to apply for some kind of scholarship and you need to have the acceptance letter in advance, please take into account that it´s necessary to submit and pay the online application one month before you need the admission documents. Additionally, you must inform the admission office about this request via email.
Tuition Fees and Financing
The tuition fees for the Master’s programs at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University are 1,500 euro per semester (3,000 euro per year)

Tuition fees are due one month before the start of the semester (15 September for Autumn semester, 15 January for Spring semester).
Students will receive the necessary information about payment approximately two months before the deadline. Students who fail to pay by the stated deadline will not be enrolled to the programme and communication from the university will stop. In the case of visa rejection after tuition has been paid, students will be refunded 90% of the tuition payment.

Tips for financing studies
Since the English-taught programs are not subsidized by the Czech Ministry of Education, students are advised to seek support from sponsors and foundations.
- Erasmus+ Master loans
- Erasmus Mundus Action II program (MU is a member of several consortia; some of which still have degree-seeking scholarships)
- International Visegrad Fund (specified countries)
- Masaryk University is accredited in the system of US Federal Student Loans
- All Masaryk University students are entitled to the subsidized meals in MU canteens and cafeterias, to a subsidy for accommodation (once per semester), and a wide range of mobility scholarships
- Faculty of Social Studies students are entitled to receive various scholarships and stipends, usually based on merit (see Students section)
English Proficiency Requirements
You are required to submit one of the English certificates mentioned below. It is not acceptable to provide proof that your previous studies were conducted in English.
Exemption: applicants meeting the condition below are exempt from any further English proficiency requirements.

Submitting an application
Students can only apply to the program when the applications are open. To apply, go to the E-application - here you also find all details about the degree program and its admission requirements with the full list of literature for the entrance exam, if applicable
Complete application means: submit the e-application, cover the application fee of CZK 800 (via bank card or bank transfer), and send all documents for evaluation .

Upload the required documents via the e-application form (name of each file clearly: eg CV_Surname_Name, etc. and send PDF files with multiple pages scanned in one)Important!: Prior to enrollment, but after being accepted into the programme, it is necessary to obtain formal recognition of prior education in the Czech Republic.
The next steps of the admission process and entrance conditions will be communicated to you through the online application and by letter / email from the University. You can track the status of your application by yourself through the online application system anytime.
Applications will be reviewed by the admission committee and students who pass the first round will be invited for a online video interview.
Specific programme requirements for application:
Energy Policy Studies Pick a topic in (international) energy politics. It does not matter whether the topic is something affecting the whole world (like climate change or transition to renewable energy) or whether it is something more regional (like the conflict and cooperation behind the Nord Stream gas pipelines, for example). In your 700-800 words essay, describe the topic and then imagine you are a political leader participating in solving an issue or a problem relevant to your topic. What would you, as a political leader, do? What solutions would you suggest and why? Explain and defend your reasoning. If citing any sources, make sure you cite them properly and that you avoid any intended or unintended plagiarism.
International Relations and European Politics Submit an English language sample of your academic writing between 3000-4000 words (10-15 pages) that best represents your ability to analyze, critically assess, and synthesize a complex issue. Your writing sample should demonstrate the ability to work with abstract concepts and/or theories and the ability to analyze and critically assess issues. You are encouraged to submit a self-contained part of your Bachelor Thesis (chapter or two) or seminar output from a course. Please indicate the providence of the essay (e.g. written as a result of my Strategic studies class, part of my bachelor thesis). Should these not be available, please submit a newly written original essay on a chosen topic related to the program.

Successful applicants for the first round may be invited for an online video interview. If this step is necessary, students will receive an email about the next steps and how to set up the interview.

Admission Requirements
All Master's programs have a Bachelor of Arts degree, preferably in social sciences or humanities. Admission is granted to candidates with good study results, strong motivation and interest in the topic. Proof of English proficiency and recommendation required. The admission committees evaluate applications of all candidates based on submitted materials (maximum 100 points; with 60 points as a passing level), and in case of need, they arrange video-interviews with the applicants.

- E-application - establish the online record of your application (it has to be submitted and paid), and send the relevant documents - application pack - for evaluation and obtaining the admission decision.

Application procedure for Conflict and Democracy Studies, Cultural Sociology and Public and Social Policy and Human Resources
Students can only apply to the programme when the applications are open. To apply, go to the E-application.
A complete application means:
- submit the e-application
- cover the application fee of CZK 800 (via bank card or bank transfer)
- and send all required documents for evaluation.

*Please note that the application for the Master program Public and Social Policy and Human Resources will be confirmed only if the applicants have prior education (at least Bachelor degree) in the following fields: Social Policy, Public Policy, Social Work, Sociology, Economics (general), Economic policy, Public economics, Public administration or Labour market policy studies.

You have to register for an online exam - online SCIO test for academic competency (the GAP test – General Academic Prerequisites) offered by Scio, and it must be paid in addition to the already paid application fee. The registration fee for the online exam is 27 €. You can choose one of the terms of the online exam (see terms and link for registration below). The minimum required percentile is 30.

Step-by-Step Guide to Scio Tests Registration
The test is organized by Scio. You have to register on their website: https://www.scioexams.com/.
- On the main website, choose DATES AND REGISTRATION under University Admission.
- Click on REGISTER on the Dates and Registration site.
Please make sure to select a date that allows you to submit your application by the application deadline. It is up to you which dates you select. However, please keep in mind that we evaluate your application only once we have all the required documents and test results. - Login (existing accounts) or register (new accounts) with your e-mail address.
Make sure that your e-mail is correct and that you use your own personal e-mail. You will be contacted by Scio with information about the exam. If you do not check your inbox and miss the exam date because of that, we cannot help you. - Select a date.
- Select the test you want to take ( GAP).
Unless you are in Czechia or Slovakia and want to take the test on-site, please make sure to register for the tests administered online. - Choose the exam service(s) you prefer.
The “MINI” package (this includes only the test and no further services) is sufficient to participate in the exam.
Then click on CONTINUE. - And then… click on CONTINUE again!
- Fill out the form.
MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE BOX “Send the best result to the faculties to which I apply”. Otherwise, Scio cannot share your results with us. - Choose your payment method.
- Check your order and confirm it.
- Pay for your order.
- You are now registered for the exam. You will receive more information from Scio via e-mail

Application Fees
Fees associated with the admission procedure for Masters programs was set at 800 CZK.
You will find full instructions in the e-application and you will use your bank's exchange rate (card, as well as bank transfer payments are possible). The applicants are required to pay the fee for each application submitted. Payment information for each electronic application, including individually assigned identification code, is generated by the Information System following the submission of the online form. The system generates a bill after each individual e-application is filled out.
When submitting more than one application, the applicant can pay for all applications with a single payment. Payment is made through the MU online shop. It is not necessary to confirm payment by post. Applicants who fail to attend the entrance examinations will not be refunded.

After Acceptance
After acceptance, students should follow all necessary information provided by the Department, the Program, and the International Office. For more information, please review our incoming students page.
Students who are accepted to the program will need to do the following.
- Students must submit their prior degrees (secondary school, BA, MA, etc) for recognition, this can be done once arriving in Brno, but steps must be taken in your home country . All accepted students receive detailed information from this process.
- Please note: students who have studied in the Czech Republic and Slovakia do not need to go through this process for studies done in these countries. Always follow directions provided by the admissions office.
