My experience with Erasmus + short exchange program
By Kateryna Omelchenko, June 2024
I am Kateryna Omelchenko, currently finishing my 4th semester of the Global Challenges: Society, Politics and Environment program. Not long time ago, I discovered Erasmus+ short-term exchanges, which drastically changed my life. Today, I would like to provide you with a glimpse of what is Erasmus+ and why is it so special to me! If you're passionate about taking active actions, expanding your horizons, and delving into non-formal education, then this opportunity is undoubtedly for you.
Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The programme places a strong focus on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people’s participation in democratic life. Erasmus+ includes a wide variety of topics, ensuring that there is something for everyone, regardless of their field of interest. This program is not only about academic learning; it is appreciation for different cultures, fostering a European identity, and developing skills essential for personal and professional growth. Usually, Erasmus+ exchanges last from 7 to 12 days.
To illustrate a clear insight, I will highlight my last Erasmus+ youth exchange - «Voices of the Next Generation», organized by Cesta Rozvoje. Throughout this project, we delved deep into the workings of the European Parliament and the European Commission, exploring elections and the political landscape. We arranged a European Parliament simulation, which included political parties and different committees to simulate the adoption of policy proposals. As part of the exchange, we also visited the Parlamentarium and the European Commission in Brussels, gaining first-hand insights into their inner functioning.
Moreover, Erasmus+ is not only about learning new things; Youth Exchange provides a platform to connect with like-minded individuals similarly dedicated to peacebuilding, inclusion, and effecting transformations. Through my involvement in Erasmus+ projects, I gained fresh insights, enriched my understanding of the importance of youth activism and built relationships with individuals who share my passion for empowering youth. These youth exchanges are a valuable chance to engage in non-formal learning, idea exchange, and skill development, all of which can equip me to create a positive influence within my community.
If you still don't have plans for the summer or considering a gap year, and want to enjoy yourself and create positive changes – recommend you consider engaging in Erasmus+ short-term exchanges, or even volunteering with the European Solidarity Corps (ESC). ESC volunteering is an excellent opportunity to help where needed, learn new skills, spend time abroad, learn new language – and definitely come back with unforgettable memories. The duration of ESC can last from 2 months up to 12 months. With your residence permit, you can apply through Czech organization like Cesta Rozvoje and go to any destination possible – Portugal, Italy, Poland, Georgia, Armenia.
Be active – explore Erasmus+ opportunities!
