1. Can you share some highlights of your time at the Faculty of Social Studies? What aspects of the program or specific courses had a significant impact on you?

Notably, interacting with influential guest speakers and professors from diverse backgrounds added a dynamic dimension to my learning experience. It was also great to interact with students from all over the world. The diverse and inclusive learning environment cultivated at the faculty greatly contributed to my personal and academic growth. Furthermore, the faculty’s emphasis on research allowed me to delve into topics that aligned with my interests. For instance, for one course, we had an assignment to conduct an in-depth interview with an experienced social worker and learn more about social work through primary research. Conducting such research projects undoubtedly strengthened my analytical and research skills.

I found all the courses offered interesting and valuable. Nevertheless, key courses piqued my interest the most, namely „Employment and Labor Market Policy: European Perspective“ and „Economics,“. The former explored the nuances of labor markets and employment policies from different perspectives, which added a unique dimension of knowledge to my studies, allowing me to gain insights into the specific challenges and potential policy solutions within the European context. Additionally, the Economics course helped me understand the intricacies of economic theories, market dynamics and global economic trends, which were particularly interesting to me.

2. How did your academic experiences at the faculty prepare you for your current career or further studies?

My academic experiences were instrumental in shaping the early stages of my career as a Human Resources (HR) professional. My chosen program’s broad blend of theoretical knowledge and practical insights provided me with comprehensive skills, such as complex problem-solving and analytical skills, that are directly applicable in the HR field. The program’s multifaceted framework, coupled with the exposure I gained to diverse international perspectives, had a direct and positive impact not only on my professional journey, but my personal development as well.

3. Were there any specific professors or mentors who influenced your academic and professional journey? How did they contribute to your development?

I encountered various professors and mentors who significantly influenced my academic and professional journey. Professor Tomáš Sirovátka was one of them. Mr. Sirovátka, who was also my thesis supervisor, always provided insightful guidance in a timely and constructive manner. His extensive expertise in the field of social and public policy was invaluable, especially in moments where I felt stuck and/or unable to understand certain topics.

4. Can you discuss any extracurricular activities, internships, or research opportunities you participated in during your time at the faculty? How did these experiences enhance your education?

Due to the demands of working full-time, my engagement in extracurricular activities internships or broader research initiatives was limited. Despite this constraint, I made the most of research projects directly related to specific assignments, which provided valued insights as well as practical skills that I was also able to apply in my professional setting.

5. What advice do you have for prospective students considering the Faculty of Social Studies? Are there specific skills or mindsets they should cultivate during their studies?

I would advise prospective students to cultivate a strong eagerness to learn and adapt to varying academic demands. I would also highly recommend being open minded and embracing the wealth of opportunities that the Faculty of Social Studies have to offer, including interesting events, a comprehensive array of programs, and a dynamic community that values collaboration and mutual support.

6. How did the faculty foster a sense of community among students? Did you find a strong support network during your time there?

Beyond collaborative discussions and group projects, the faculty fostered a sense of community by organizing different social events outside the classrooms. Such events included BBQs and get-togethers, providing the students with opportunities to connect in a more relaxed setting. Furthermore, I believe that the faculty’s active social media presence and inclusion of students in their online content encouraged various ideas, experiences, and information to be shared between students. The digital engagement enhanced the sense of community, especially for prospective students still living abroad, and current students in different programs.

7. Can you share any challenges you faced during your academic journey and how you overcame them? What lessons did you learn from those experiences?

As an international student from Mozambique, I had to quickly navigate and adapt myself to a completely new environment in the Czech Republic. Notably, I had to acclimate to a different educational system, learn the social norms and find a way to overcome the language barrier. I overcame these challenges by adopting a proactive mindset. I did my own research and sought assistance from people who were knowledgeable in all the areas I struggled in, and the assistance and knowledge I acquired facilitated my integration into the academic and social aspects of the community. Despite the numerous challenges I faced, I successfully graduated with honors in both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. My various achievements during my academic journey are testaments that challenges can be transformative experiences that lead to success. My experiences showcased my ability to adapt and thrive in diverse environments. The lessons I learned significantly reinforced my resilience and determination to learn and to get out of my comfort zone. As a result, I am furthering my academic journey by pursuing another academic degree and embracing all the challenges and opportunities that will contribute to my personal and professional growth.
