Recognition of your degree or education in the Czech Republic

Students planning to enroll in a degree program at a university in the Czech Republic, whose priority education was acquired in another country, will need to have their priority degree / education formally recognized. Within the enrollment period, students must submit documents for successful completion and recognition.

There are two ways to obtain recognition of prior degrees. Students are required to have their degrees recognized and can choose either to study at the Faculty of Social Studies. (1) General Nostrification - valid everywhere in the Czech Republic (2) Verification - valid only for studies at the Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University.

General Nostrification

Bachelor students choosing this option will apply for recognition outside Masaryk University at the Regional Office. Please visit this website for more information.

Master and PhD students will apply at the Rectors Office at Masaryk University, please visit this website for instructions.

Verification at the Faculty of Social Studies

Students can choose to have their prior degree recognized directly at the Faculty of Social Studies ONLY IF they will be enrolled in programs at this Faculty.

The fee for the degree / education recognition at the Faculty of Social Studies is 750 CZK . Please use this link for payment:  https://is.muni.cz/obchod/baleni/147830

For questions regarding this process please contact Klára Němečková at 217236@muni.cz.

Bachelors Studies

It is necessary to submit the required documents to the authorized person at the faculty:

  1. Recognition of Foreign Secondary School Education   - notary-certified copy of the final secondary school certificate. A certified translation of the certificate into Czech or English is required (documents issued in English or Slovak do not need translation).
  2. Letter of eligibility is required. Students can find a template for the eligibility letter here  for their secondary school to complete.

Please bring with you also the original of your certificate / diploma to be presented at the faculty upon your arrival.

Important!   Masaryk University requires, in accordance with section 90, subsection 3 of Act no. 111/1998 Coll., On Higher Education Institutions , Authentication of Signatures and Stamps on the Original of Diplomas.

  • Means of authenticating the signatures and stamps occurring on the original of the diploma dependence on the country that was issued, ie where the applicant earned his / her education.
  • The following table contains a list of individual countries and requirements related to the verification of diplomas obtained in them.

The signatures and stamps of authentication can be classified into three categories, depending on the (non) existence of an international agreement:

1 - No authentication required: There is a valid bilateral agreement between the country and the Czech Republic concerning mutual legal assistance. Diplomas issued in these countries are valid in the Czech Republic without the need for any further authentication of stamps and signatures. Only certified copy is required (made by Czech notary or made by CzechPoint), for countries that signed multilateral convention on judicial assistance

2 - A postille is required: the relevant country is a signatory to the multilateral treaty abolishing the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents (The Hague Convention). The authenticity of signatures and stamps on a diploma earned in one of the signatory countries must be certified by the so-called Apostille, issued by the competent authority of the country. For the list of competent authorities in all signatory countries, please visit the Hague Conference website.

3 - Superlegalization (Higher Authentication of Documents): Relates to Other Countries; The authenticity of the signatures and stamps on the diplomas issued in them has been certified by means of so-called superlegalization (Higher Authentication of Documents), ie verification of the diploma by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State which is the seat of the higher education institution, which has issued the document (or its authorized foreign body), followed by verification of the Czech representative office (embassy) based in the foreign country.

Below is a table to help you determine which authentication method is required for your country.

Please note.  Degree Recognition is  only  needed by students wishing to register at the Czech University for the entire degree program, but  not  by visiting or exchange students. We strongly recommend that all degree applicants start to complete the verification (apostille / superlegalization) of their certificates / diplomas in advance because it can take longer to get the stamp.
