Learning Outcomes
- Analyze and interpret the current issues of global challenges from interdisciplinary perspectives.
- Articulate and critically use the basic theories of each of the three subfields: political science, sociology, and environmental studies.
- Competently apply appropriate quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods in research projects, analyze and interpret both quantitative and qualitative data and communicate the results to various audiences.
Degree Overview
Today’s world faces many global challenges impacting on the environment, politics, and society. Frequently, demand for change is coming for groups and individuals. There is a demand for the experts who will be able to comprehend, analyze and evaluate the global issues from multiple perspectives. Traditionally, students choose to study either sociology, political sciences, or environmental sciences. This program will teach students in theory and practice of each of these disciplines, and instruct students how to solve problems in an interdisciplinary manner.
Many inter-governmental policies today strive to incorporate many lenses into their decision making. The program is unique because it teaches students from the start to think about problems from the start from a holistic interdisciplinary perspective, rather than just from one lens. The 3-year bachelor programme has been prepared jointly by the Department of Sociology, the Department of Political Sciences, and the Department of Environmental Studies at the Faculty of Social Studies.
The field of sociology teaches students to understand the relationship between the individual and society, and how societal structures, norms and patterns influence the individual. Studying sociological theory gives students the ability to understand social structures and how it is possible to construct societies. Understanding sociology allows students to see how certain laws and movements can impact different demographics in both positive and negative ways, providing an important lens. Global decisions by policy actors impact the local lives, studying sociology allows students to consider the social implications of policies, and also to consider the social norms of the society may impact the success of a policy.
The purpose of environmental studies is to understand (with a background of basic knowledge in the natural sciences) the historic and cultural causes of the current environmental crisis and to look for possible solutions in the areas of social, economic, legal, political, and religious studies (and their interactions). Environmental studies traditionally rely on different fields, thus is a perfect fit to this program, interweaving environmental goals into political and social realities.
The political science field teaches students how to understand the political processes that influences modern life through the power of the state: economy, education, environment, health, international relations, etc. The field of political science provides an intrical third leg to this programme, giving students the political realities to tackle environmental and social challenges.
Put together, the changes in the societies and newly emerging challenges call for the establishing the interdisciplinary field of study that will educate the experts who are able to analyze environmental, political and social challenges of the globalized world.
