People of FSS: Who is Marián Miško

Does your internet connection work at your workplace? Do you have a work laptop that can connect to eduroam Wi-Fi? Is your data protected by an antivirus program? Can you communicate online via Zoom? If so, know that Trebišov native (GPS: 48.61916509002757, 21.71548105676782) Bc. Marián Miško is one of the people from CIKT who makes sure that all these things work for us.

Marian has been a member of the FSS team since May 1, 2005. He joined us after he finished his studies at the Brno University of Technology, during the year when FSS was moving from the building on Gorkeho Street to our current premises. At that time, we needed to build a new reliable network and Marián was one of the four people who contributed to that.

Marian is the network administrator. He is responsible for ensuring that we all have a working internet connection at all times and everywhere. What does that entail? For example, visiting the attic of our building where dozens of switches and the little boxes that plug our computers into the network are hidden, exploring the intricacies of the software on our computers, or taking care of servers that most of us have no idea what they look like or where they are located. Most of this work is invisible to us. This is by design as the users are most satisfied when the network is simply working. This is why most network maintenance happens at "non-traditional times", such as on holidays or during weekends.

Marian is the type of person who is always willing to help with any "silly thing". You can turn to him without fear because he always treats everyone in a kind, friendly way, and understands that not everyone is an "IT guy". "He is patient with my inability to put what I need into IT language. He can explain what I don't understand in clear terms or has willingly gone into the office with me because my internet is 'down', only to find out that a disconnected network cable was to blame. For me, Marian is an example of an 'IT person with a human face'. I am very glad that we have him at the faculty," says Martin Vaculík, Vice Dean for Research and Doctoral Studies.
