Workspaces of Public Service Television: The Case of Czech Television’s Studio Brno

| Popis | The importance of places and spaces in which journalists conduct their work has been under-researched in journalism and media scholarship. Although journalists’ connection to a particular locality has formed part of inquiries into local journalism (and recently also hyper-local journalistic contents), the focus has remained mainly on the local characteristics of journalistic outputs and journalists’ relationships with their audiences and sources and the embeddedness of these in a concrete physical location (Franklin 2006, Nielsen 2015). This paper proposes that a broader understanding of influences on journalists’ work needs to take into account journalists’ experiences of and understandings of spaces and places in which they conduct their work. The recent moves of media organizations from prime (city centre) locations to the outskirts (or even to industrial parks) provide a rare opportunity to study journalists and their work places and spaces at a time of disruption and adjustment (Usher 2015). This disruption opens avenues for greater reflection on the influences of places and spaces of journalistic work on work practices and routines and also on journalists’ understanding of the evolving role of their profession. The empirical research that underpins this paper has been conducted at a local branch of the Czech Television – a public service broadcaster – in the city of Brno and involved interviews with journalists working at various positions within the station’s hierarchy. From its foundation, the local public service television and radio provider was situated in the very heart of the city, surrounded by major administrative, cultural and educational institutions (Brno is Czech Republic’s second largest city and an important administrative centre). However, the building has become completely unsuitable for the current needs (and size) of broadcasters and new premises were built on the outskirts of the city. Although the premises are taylor-made and the facilities are state-of-the-art and could hence be expected to provide ideal workspaces for journalists, they perceive the loss of the central location as much more fundamental than an issue of most suitable spaces for work. |
