Popis Racism profoundly shapes the lives of racial and ethnic minorities, undermining individuals’ health, social trust on the level of communities, and functioning of societies at large by perpetuating systemic inequalities. It manifests on individual, institutional, and cultural levels. Yet, the voices of Roma, especially in Europe, remain absent from studies on the impact of racism, leaving gaps in understanding the minorities’ experiences. The goal of the research project in Czechia is to bridge this gap by comprehensively mapping the impact of different forms of racism on the quality of Roma’s life. Two focus groups, each comprising 5-7 Roma participants of distinct age (from 20 to 64), education and residential settings, investigated the link between different forms of racism and its impact on the quality of Roma’s life. Thematic analysis revealed significant stress associated especially with cultural racism, in the form of racially motivated attacks by skinhead groups, rooted in extremist ideologies. Such adverse experiences led to anticipatory anxiety and influenced the daily navigating of the, often hostile, social environment by the Roma. These incidents, primarily from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, spread fear, instilled helplessness, and contributed to transgenerational trauma, shaping perceptions of safety, trust, relations to the majority, and Roma’s social identity to this day. Our findings will be used to develop a comprehensive diagnostic tool for measuring different forms of experienced racism. Such a missing instrument can be used by professionals and policy makers to map and mitigate the impact of racism in Europe.
