| Popis | Sinai is a professor of Islamic studies and a fellow of Pembroke College at the University of Oxford. This exceptional dictio- nary provides readers with a comprehensive overview of key Qur’anic terms. Structured alphabetically, the dictionary pres- ents these terms with concise or essay- like explanations that capture their essential meanings. The study emphasizes the importance of a “concordantial” translation of Qur’anic terms, noting that different definitions of words can result in signif- icant changes in both Meccan occurrences and Medinan su- rahs. While this study shares similarities with other Qur’anic reference works, it offers deeper insights and features more pages that showcase cumulative progress through a combi- nation of various methods. Sinai acknowledges subjective interpretations in previous translations and dictionaries and compares numerous sources to demonstrate that his trans- lation is also subject to improvement. Each important term is meticulously researched to uncover parallels and multiple meanings. The examination of these terms includes compari- sons with other sacred texts, such as the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, as well as their meanings in pagan times and in poetry. With the primary goal of exploring term meanings, this work is an indispensable resource for Islamic studies and theology, enabling readers to delve deeper into the wisdom of the Qur’an. |
